Kenro Izu

Kenro Izu (b. 1949, Osaka, Japan) is a celebrated alternative-process photographer who uses his custom-built, large-format, three-hundred-pound Deardorff camera to produce his timeless imagery, making detailed, lustrous 14×20 contact prints on hand-coated platinum-palladium paper, with permanent archival qualities. The result is widely recognized as being among the most beautiful prints in the history of the medium. Izu has published 14 books and his work has been featured in dozens of solo exhibitions around the world. He has received numerous awards and fellowship throughout his prolific career. Kenro Izu lives and works in Rhinebeck, New York.

Kenro Izu’s forty years of photography can be regarded as the meditations of a tireless pilgrim, Who is still searching for the spiritual essence of existence, as he continually studies various rituals and places of worship all across the globe, so as to gloriously render the humankind’s primordial desire for salvation on the one hand, and portray it as an endless struggle on the other. Nabshi Center’s fourth book is a selected retrospective of the works by the Japanese, USA-based photographer, Kenro Izu, who is a fine example of Oriental artists who have remained true to their Eastern beliefs and cultures, in spite of leaving their homelands to develop their careers in the West. Publication of the book is timed to coincide with the exhibition of photos by Kenro Izu held in Nabshi Center in September 2019.
