A Conversation Between Nazanin Khosravani and Shadi Ghadirian
Shadi Ghadirian, one of the foremost, most talented artist photographers of her generation in Iran, has been depicting changes in Iranian society and in her personal life continuously over the past 20 years. In her staged portraits, characters are portrayed as ‘sandwiched’ between past and present, public and private; revealing witty paradoxes and gender differences in their juxtapositions. Ghadirian’s narrative involved with her life experience. In her stunning photographs, set mostly in traditional Iranian interiors, she hints at what it means to be young, a woman, and an artist, torn between workloads and expectations. Her photographs reveal a strong connection to Iranian history, reflecting it with great tenderness. Her oeuvre is neither about politics nor polemics but involves a spirited wink at both authority and domesticity, transforming life’s resilience into art. Ghadirian draws upon photographic styles that span the history of photography to add more layers to her rich and fascinating work.
